When it comes to travel, pets get a bit of an unfair reputation. After all, they have absolutely no idea what is going on, apart from being bombarded with an array of enticing sights and smells throughout the process.
And while their excited behavior can often lead to them being left at home, below are some great tips which can help you and your loved one enjoy a vacation together.
Check with the Vet
Your first destination is going to be your vet to give your little one a check up and to make sure that they are healthy enough to travel. If you are traveling into a remote area or a different country, ask the vet about any appropriate or required shots which your animal will need to protect them and to allow them clear passage as you travel.
Keep Your Pets Well Packed
Just like you need to stay hydrated and keep your tummy satisfied, so too does your dog have needs while you travel. In particular, it’s hydration needs. Always be sure to pack a good amount of water for your pet to drink along with a bowl for them to drink out of. The Groupon Coupons page for Petco has some great deals on travel bowls which you can collapse and easily store in the car.
Along with water, be sure to pack them their regular food along with some treats for them to enjoy just as you and the rest of the passengers do. And of course, don’t forget to pack their favorite toy. When it comes time for breaks, playing with their toy is going to be a great way for them to release any pent up energy caused by sitting in a confined space for such a long period.
Keep Your Car Protected
Along with keeping your pet comfortable, it’s important that you keep your stress levels down and travel comfortably yourself. Look through your linen closet for any old sheets or blankets which you don’t use and can’t see any future use for and use these to cover your vehicle. If your little ones have sharp claws or nails, consider placing a cheap tarp on your seat underneath any blankets or sheets to place over them for your pet’s comfort.
Strap Them In
Just as you take your safety into account by clicking in your seatbelt, it’s important that you also protect your pet from injury in the event of a collision. Instead of just using your regular seat belts, be sure to strap them into a purpose designed travel harness which can be strapped into your regular seat belt to provide an appropriate level of protection.
Just because Hollywood would have you believe that traveling with pets results in nothing but anarchy and silly string being sprayed all around the car, the event can be quite pleasant and relaxed, with the benefit of being able to enjoy a vacation with your loved one while you all arrive safe and sane!
